Chapter sixteen

Devotion

Conor worked with care as he tied off the strands of the braided leather cord. The wood carving woven into the bracelet’s center was precisely what he had hoped for. Macsen had done beautiful work, smoothing the chunk of white pine into a small circle with an etching of a running wolf and a soaring hawk. It was a simple token, one that Conor was certain Rhiannon would not exactly understand, but he intended to take her into the mountains the following evening to present it to her.

Pleased with his work, he set the bracelet on the bedside table, stretching out his back as he got to his feet. His muscles were sore after spending most of the day with his bow. The weeks of lying in bed had done him no favors. And I can hardly afford to lose any skill with Kelnorian soldiers on the prowl, he thought as he walked over to the fire.

He threw in a few more logs, Dai and Ceri lying on the floor a few inches away, absorbing the warmth of the flames. As Conor stoked the fire, Dai nudged his leg and Conor scratched him behind the ears. Conor glanced over at the door, knowing Rhiannon would be in soon. She had offered to help Leif take care of the dirty plates and utensils after the evening meal, giving Conor the perfect opportunity to retreat to his chambers and finish the bracelet.

Ceri looked up, awoken from her slumber, at the knock at the door. Brynn called Conor’s name and he told his sister to enter, getting to his feet. Brynn stepped in, carrying a jar of salve, and Conor moved to the door to greet her, his steps slow and stiff.

“Exactly how long were you out with your bow today?” she asked with a frown.

“I’m just sore,” he replied, taking the salve from her. “That’s all.”

She sighed. “I just know how you can be about pushing yourself.”

“I’m alright.”

She bit her lip, nodding as she passed him the small concoction that he knew would soothe his aching back. As she handed it to him, she looked around, her gaze falling on the bedside table.

He shifted his weight, trying to step in front of her. “Thank you for the salve. It’s rather late—”

Before he could finish, she had pushed past him and walked over to the table, picking up the bracelet.

“So, Macsen was working on the carving for you then?” she said as she examined it. “Is this what I think it is?”

He grimaced, taking the bracelet back and setting it down on the table beside the salve. “I haven’t asked her yet, so don’t say anything. Please.”

Her eyes sparkled and she gave him a triumphant grin. “But you’re going to ask her?”

“Yes. Tomorrow.”

She immediately pulled him into a hug, practically squealing with excitement.

He couldn’t help but chuckle as he eased back from her. “I take it you approve?”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course I approve. She’s going to say yes. I just know she will.
